"The DOORS are these experiences. All of these things that happened to me, certainly happened to Jim. Jim was into the same sort of things more or less...He went to the film school at UCLA because he had seen the same films I had...Because the whole point of making film is that it combined all the arts: combined theater, combined photography, for me it combined music...and acting and design...All the arts combine into cinema. So that's the thing that put me into the cinema department at UCLA, it was the same thing that put Morrison into the cinema department. Then, all of our artistic background is thrown into the DOORS...How do we bring the drama, how do we bring the melody, how do we bring the joy, the pathos, the sorrow, the terror? How do we bring the terror into rock 'n' roll music? That's what the DOORS were all about."
